Blood In Poop

The presence of blood in poop is quite an embarrassing and frightening problem. So, if disturbing issues like, “when I poop blood comes out” and “why does blood come out when I poop” are swirling in your mind then read ahead to analyze the underlying cause.

What Does It Mean When Blood Comes Out When You Poop?

What does it mean when you poop and blood comes out? To understand this, you need to explore a number of reasons before coming to a conclusion. First of all, try to ascertain if it is actually blood in poop or simply bloody looking poop.

At times, we do not notice but foods like tomatoes, beets, pomegranates and other similar red colored foods lead to red colored stools. In fact, people often ask, “Can watermelon cause red stool?” Well, the answer is yes, in certain individuals, excessive consumption of watermelon can make the stools turn red in color but it is not a serious issue.

Consumption of iron supplements, black licorice, blueberries, blackberries etc, on the other hand, make the poop appear dark in color, again giving the impression of having bloody poop.

If it is actually the case of blood coming out when you poop then some common causes are constipation, internal or external hemorrhoids, anal fissures and other similar issues that cause rectal injury during bowel movements.

Conditions like Gastritis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Peptic Ulcers, Colitis, Crohn’s Disease, Vascular Malformation, Intestinal Infection, Colon Polyps etc. Hence, it is recommended to have a nutritious, fiber rich diet carefully avoiding foods that you are allergic to in order to avoid a host of digestive problems giving rise to the frightening condition of pooping out blood.

Rectal bleeding accompanied by fever may be caused by chronic liver disease. Certain conditions, for instance Ischemic Colitis can also cause abdominal pain. A disease called Watermelon Stomach may also give rise to the problem of watermelon red poop or melena accompanied by other symptoms such as lethargy, weakness, heart palpitations, chronic headaches and anemia due to severe loss of blood.

The disease is characterized by dilation of blood vessels in the lower part of the stomach and sudden hemorrhage leading to internal bleeding. The exact cause of this condition is still not known. Nonetheless, it is often associated with Atropic Gastritis, Cirrhosis, Chronic Kidney Failure, Lupus, Scleroderma, Portal Hypertensive Gastropathy and other connective tissue related diseases.

In case you are still worried about “how come blood came out when I pooped” then while analyzing the cause bear in mind that in most of the cases, bright red blood in stool is usually indicative of an external problem whereas the presence of dark blood in poop can be indicative of potentially serious problems such as colon cancer, stomach cancer or bleeding disorders like Hemophilia.

Also, if you are wondering, “Why is it that blood comes out when I poop?” and you smoke and drink alcoholic beverages excessively then you have a lot of options to explore as these substances tend to irritate the lining of esophagus and stomach thereby increasing the risk of developing several diseases. Prolonged use of pain medications, non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, in particular may also cause this problem.

When dealing with this embarrassing problem, try to observe your condition for a few days and do not panic. In case you find blood in poop and toilet paper on a somewhat regular basis then do not hesitate to approach a qualified medical professional soon for better advice on the basis of accurate diagnosis.

    • Sometimes you can get a “chapped” butt, which can lead to blood aging up on your toilet paper. The way to avoid this is to keep the area between your butt cheeks dry using some antichafe cream.

  12. Any of you females that just had a baby that has bleeding in the anal area should consult a docter about that. If you didnt have a c section and acutally pushed the baby out, you can acutally tear your rectum which causes it to bleed while number 2ing.

Anyone that has black tarry stools (which can) have a strong foul odor to it also, or coffee ground appearing emesis\vomit, should seek medical attention right away! I had an upper G.I. hemorrhage or bleed a few years ago. I had a blood vessel burst in my stomach and a second one that was about to also blow. I had been using Ibuprofen for a few weeks for back pain, when I knew I should not, because of having had a gastric bypass that caused this to happen. When tyIenol is all that you can have after Gastric Bypass and it did not help my back pain I had to do something. I had no idea using Ibuprophen it could become a problem that fast! Anyway, out of know where I became really dizzy and sick and just not feeling right. I then felt like I needed to vomit and experienced several wretching dry heaves, then suddenly felt like I was going to have diarrhea, and had to get to the bathroom immediately. I know this is gross but, I then had an explosive, massive amount of black, watery diarrhea. It had a definite strong pungent smell. But I have had a slow bleed before that was not diarrhea that slightly had that pungent smell (but don’t let the lack of smell determine if you should seek medical help!) Anyway I went to the emergency room and they took me straight to ICU. I ask them why ICU? They said, “because we don’t mess around with a GI bleed. You can lose someone real quick.” Now don’t panic! Use your head. You can determine if it is something you should seek immediate medical attention for or not. If it is a situation that is a massive amount like mine was and or you start feeling really bad right before it hits, if it isn’t a massive amount, seek immediate attention. This is common sense. Now when I have black in my stool since then I consider, have I eaten anything in the past few days that is blue like blueberries, or purple, or black like olives. Usually it is something I have eaten and can remember it. Last fall though, I periodically had small amounts of black and thought it might be blood, but seeing that it was very small and no smell, I did nothing for the week or 2 that it happened a few times. I happened to have my annual Gynocology appointment come up at this time too and they did the usual fecal hemma cult test, and it showed up positive. So, it truly had been small amounts of blood I had seen in my stool. I called my Gastroenterologist office and they scheduled an upper and lower GI scope. They could not get me in for a month. Now, I knew if it suddenly became large amounts I needed to get medical attention and not wait for a month till I had the test. And as it happened when I had the test done there was nothing found and whatever it had been had taken care of itself. The 1st time I had a GI bleed I had been taking Excederine and not been told after Gastric Bypass you cannot use Asprin. I woke up on a Saturday morning and stood up to take the dog out to potty, and could not stay in a standing position. I felt like I was going to faint. I had to crawl on my hands and knees. I had no black stools prior to this either. I went to the emergency room and they did bloodwork and my hemoglobin was 7.5 (which should be 12 to 15.5 for women) and I was anaemic. It had gotten low enough to cause me to not be able to be in a standing or walking position. I had to have a blood transfusion. Several days later I had the black tarry stool. The bleed had already stopped and because I usually tended to be constipated at that time well, the blood finally showed up after the fact. ???? also, when you have a black movement and there is bright red blood this is most probably a bleeding irritated hemorrhoid or possibly a fissure. If it is a small amount of blood it try treating your hemorrhoids with over the counter products to get the inflammation down and facilitate healing. If that does not work the doctor can prescribe something like Proctofoam or Proctozone which are great products I have used. They work! ???? Again, if there is a copious\large amount of bright red blood seek medical attention right away. So, I know this is long, but I wanted to give anyone that looks on here seeking information, to help themselves determine if and when they should seek medical attention, to have a hopefully clearer idea how they should proceed.

The question marks on my previous post\comment were actually emojis. The hemorrhoid medications I listed are very effective and I wanted to clarify, so it doesn’t create any confusion that I did not place or intend for there to be question marks there.
