After getting your tongue pierced, hopefully by a professional, you need to exercise some precautionary steps for tongue piercing aftercare in order to aid the process of healing, reduce the discomfort and avoid infection.
Aftercare for tongue piercing is important because the tongue is likely to become swollen and tender a few hours after being pierced. The pain is generally more in the morning. The best course of action in this regard is to place crushed ice on the tongue and let it melt. Ice helps to reduce the swelling and pain.
Because of tongue’s exceptional healing ability, tongue piercing healing time is usually 4 to 6 weeks but it may vary from one individual to another, depending on a number of factors like the type of jewelry used, aftercare and health in general.
Resolving Doubts Related To Aftercare for Tongue Piercing
Youngsters going for tongue piercing often have queries like “how long should I wait to smoke after a tongue piercing”, “should I use a special toothpaste now that my tongue is pierced”, “What if you burn your tongue and its pierced”, “is hydrogen peroxide bad for tongue piercings” and numerous other doubts .
Tongue piercing aftercare guidelines recommend not to smoke for at least one week after the piercing to avoid further troubles. In addition, do not drink alcoholic beverages until the swelling goes away. Avoid kissing and do not indulge in oral sex during the healing period.
Plus, you will have to subsist on soft foods and liquid diet (like mashed potatoes, soups, broths etc) for about a week. Stay away from spicy and crunchy foods. Tongue piercing is also likely to affect your speech, especially during the first 2-3 days.
As for doubts regarding yellow tongue after piercing, it is normal to have a yellow film on the surface of the tongue 2-3 days after piercing. Some believe this happens because of overuse of mouthwash. The problem mostly resolves within a few days.
Though, yellow discharge from tongue accompanied by severe swelling is more often than not, a sign of infection due to negligence towards tongue piercing aftercare.
You will have to take antibiotics advised by a doctor to get rid of tongue piercing infection. A small amount of whitish discharge, however, is not a big issue as it is just a collection of dead blood cells that are unable to form scab on the wound because of saliva.
Hydrogen peroxide is often considered bad for tongue piercings because it tends to disrupt the natural process of healing. Under normal circumstances, it is better to rely on the “good bacteria” naturally present in the saliva to avoid infections.
As for the toothpaste, it is better to use a gentle toothpaste that does not burn after tongue piercing. In case you burn your tongue severely after piercing, you should consult the piercer as soon as possible.
To avoid burning sensation, avoid having extremely hot foods and beverages. The use of mouthwash containing alcohol may also cause some stinging or burning sensation.
Practice good oral hygiene, switch to a new toothbrush with soft bristles and rinse the mouth with a non alcohol antiseptic mouthwash (preferably, dilute it with water) several times in a day, especially after eating.
You can gradually reduce the frequency of mouthwash rinses after two weeks. Needless to add, monitor your piercing (but do not play with it!) to help detect complications as soon as possible. Follow the instructions of the piercer and adopt proper tongue piercing aftercare measures until the wound heals completely.

Okay i got my tongue pierced 4 days ago.and i have a faint yellowish discharge.My tongue is not swollen and there’s not really any pain. i have been rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash and today i just started to rinse with salt water.Is it infected? or am i just being paranoid?

No, it’s not infected but keep up with the mouthwash and saltwater. The abscess should go away, and unless it hurts to the touch you should be fine.
your just paranoid it isnt infected salt water is just another cleaning solution you can use instead of mouthwash but it is all a preference. I’ve had my piercing for a year and a half and it did the same and thats what the doc told me when i went.

I’ve had my tongue pierce for a week my friend had his done a month he said if you just scratch the yellow off its just dead taste buds or skin and when it is healed enough(doesn’t have to be all the way) then just strach it off no listerine it will rust your tongue ring. And ketchup kinda stings but don’t baby. I got mine done 5 days ago an just now gettin rid of my lisp lol.. Swollen is almost gone so cant wait to down size my bar.. But all in all i like the piercing, i have been wanting to get it done for a long time.

you can use either, salt water is probably better because its more natural, but mouth wash is all the same in cleaning it.
I jus got my tongue pierce today about 3-4 hours ago and is not painfully at all the swelling is the most annoying part of all. Can’t wait to get a new smaller bar..lol
I got my toung pierced 12 hours ago, It was not sore or swollen, barely even had a lisp then I had a few beers and a joint and been smoking cigarettes and now its realy sore and swollen, hurts to talk and swallow liquids, ate a pack of biscuits and it was agony but I was craving them so I beared the pain, started using mouthwash about an hour ago and it feels a bit better, hope most of the pain goes away by the morning. is there anything I should do?

i got my tongue pierced on sunday (4 days ago) and i am wondering if the web on my tongue should be hurting? because it does… not a lot but a little. the swelling wasn’t that bad and i didn’t eat a liquid diet, i don’t advise this, i’m just hardheaded and like pizza too much. haha. but i am worried it was pierce too far back.

hey quick update! it was only that one night that crazy shit happened. it was because i brushed with a strong whitening toothpaste and didnt rinse with purified water after. (i was too lazy to get a water bottle allll the way downstairs) that’s what i get tho! LESSON LEARNED! its fine now. i even forget i have it sometimes lol yay!

Got my tongue pierced 3 days ago the piercing itself didnt hurt and for a good few hours after it didnt, but then the swelling started and omg i couldnt pronounce a thing, i am still eating soups and soft foods and am a little fed up cos i am bloody starving just want a pizza or chinese
, i have a slush drink or ice water throughout the day and this helps with the swelling which is dissapearing slowly, i am still struggling to talk prop and the mornings are worse, i do keep getting a dry mouth though just after i clean my teeth and in the morning… i can only put it down to healing?? i’m taking inbuprofen every 4 hours and this helps alot to reduce the swelling and for a few hours its like i dont have it there, mouthwash with no alcohol after eveything i eat drink and everytime i have a fag, its still a little tender and feels more sore now rather than swollen.
I will just be pleased to change the bar next week, as this one is so bloody long and its the bar lenght i am struglling with can deal with the pain lol. Anyone who wants it done id say go for it i wanted it pierced for years and finally at 23 plucked up the courage and i dont regret it one bit! xx
got mine done 5 days ago, the swelling has gone way down, if the swelling is really bothering u take paracetemol or ibprofen. yellowish white coating is completly normal and its part of the healing process, its the dead white cells that form on your tongue or something, and it will go away after a few day maybe a week. I smoked straight after i got mine done and nothing happened and is still fine now, and i also had alcohol and also nothing happened.

I just got my tongue pierced tuesday(2days)ago, and my tongue is still very swollen and the tip is sore, I been melting crushed ice on my tongue to help the swelling go down i just wish it was a faster process. Me and my sister got ours done the 8th of september (3 days ago) and mine has a yellowish on the top , and white around the barbell. I had my tongue pierced for the second time on Tuesday I have no swelling and the white stuff under your tongue is normal. I’ve been eating whatever I want and I have no problems. Keeping your tongue clean is very important it might seem like it’s to much but it is worth it. This is the third day with it and im about to change my ball on the top.

I got My tongue done on the 1st of november and its now the 6th, my tongue is still swollen some but it doesnt hurt although the bar is freakin long so when i sleep the way my mouth loosens up the balls goes side ways and sits on my tongue and i got real bad dry mouth at night so when the ball sits there for awhile and my mouth dries up it leaves a ball indint on my tongue and thats the only thing thats kinda sore well and the bottom part of my mouth is sore cause like i said the bar is to long, i tried changin the bar today and it took 5 minutes but my tongue is still to swollen for a shorter bar, I do got the yellow lookin tongue and i got a little bit yellow white discharge but its normal, but with the tongue film when ever my tongue wasnt sore then i brushed my teeth and i slowly brushed my tongue, dont play with your tongue ring to much because it will tear the healing process on the inside i kissed like 2 days after having my mine done, be carful when eating though because with the bar being so long u might end up biting the tongue ring like i have several times, && it sucks, but eat icecream drink cold drinks like water milk or orange juice, I loved ice cream it was good, so i would do the icecream, Goodluck to everyone else,
Okay guys I have gone thru a little bit of everything and if you read all the post we all have Or most of us. I got mine done nov 6, 2011 and to days the ninth. So u have had it for about 2 or 3 days. I was super paranoid just like you all. I still am I think I run to the bathroom 20 times a day. my tongue is no longer in pain it’s soar around the hole. I still have a little white discharge which is all normal. The only time should worry is if it green or brown. I use biotene mouth was it’s great. I am very hard head and suffer for it cause I try to eat hard food. Just do a soft diet no dairy or bread. You can cause a yeast infection. It’s normal to feel pain the first few days as well as 2 weeks swelling varies between a person seeing little bleeding is normal a film over the tongue is okay as well it’s from the use of mouth wash. The white under the barbell is so common it can be pale & yellowish it’s dead blood cells with with no where to go it is soft and yucky like. Your taste buds around the piercing may feel rough and discolored some times white yellow or red normal their just trying to heal. Best thing to do I’d leave it alone stress less and let it heal at it’s own paste salt water can bother the piercing so do it at your own risk. Speech is something that was a worry for so it takes time to say words right. You can’t roll your tongue cause it’s sore and on top of that it’s a brand new metal bar in your mouth. I been saying I wanted a tongue piercing for so long know no one ever tells you about the he’ll after. Good lucky guys. Hope I helped anyone who was freaking out.
