Chest pain on left side is often taken as a sign of heart attack. Angina is another crucial type of chest pain that is caused by excessive physical exertion or stress. It is particularly considered as a warning sign when it occurs during rest. Nonetheless, pain in left side of chest could also indicate minor issues like acidity and heartburn.
Heart Attack: Let us first discuss left sided chest pain as a sign of heart attack. It usually arises in the mid to left side of the chest and may extend to the left shoulder, the left arm, the jaw, the stomach, or the back.
The condition is often accompanied by other symptoms like breathlessness, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fatigue, abdominal discomfort, excessive sweating etc. Cardiac pain generally involves the center of the chest or upper abdomen.
Angina: Angina is another serious form of left side chest pain that is considered as a primary symptom of Coronary Artery Disease. It is typically described as a choking pain or a feeling of constriction, pressure and tightness in the chest on the left side or behind the breastbone.
The pain tends to radiate to the lower jaw, neck, shoulder, back, arm, or hand but generally subsides within a few minutes. It is also accompanied by vague abdominal discomfort, increased heart rate and blood pressure and often a burning sensation in throat.
The best course of action to be taken during this condition is to take rest as it indicates that the heart needs more oxygen. Variant Angina, a type of Angina is a rare form of Angina pain that occurs during rest and increases the risk of heart attack. It is mostly caused because of Coronary Spasms and should not be ignored at all.
Ischemia related chest pain on left side induced by inadequate blood supply generally remains the same irrespective of body position. More often than not, chest pains on left side that have been constant for days or weeks are generally not associated with Heart Attack or Angina.
Besides, individuals often confuse sharp chest pain on left side above breast with Heart Attack related chest pain. However, in most of the cases, Heart Attacks are not characterized by localized chest pain. In addition, a condition called Premature Beats can also cause chest pain on left hand side during rest. The pain tends to reduce after physical activity.
Apart from these two scary conditions, left chest pain, in general can be caused due to problems associated chest wall, lungs, esophagus, muscles, ribs, tendons, or nerves. Some such conditions associated with chest pain, especially on the left side of the chest are:
Costochondritis: Costochondritis is often described as a sharp pain in left side of chest associated with Fibromyalgia. It is characterized by inflammation of the cartilage that connects the ribs to the breastbone. It causes severe chest pain on either side of the sternum (costochondral joints), near the third to fifth ribs.
The pain tends to increase on taking a deep breath or on coughing. At times, it may also cause dull pain in left side of chest. Tietze’s syndrome is another similar condition causing superficial rather deep chest pain on the left side.
Abdominal Problems: Issues like Gallbladder Disorders, Peptic Ulcers, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Pancreatitis and other such gastrointestinal problems. Acute Gallbladder Attack, for instance are associated with lower left chest pain.
Chronic Gallbladder Disorders can cause recurring lower chest pain or upper abdominal chest pain. In case of Pancreatitis, chest pain tends to ease to some extent by leaning forward.
Most of these abdominal causes of chest pain because of factors related to food ingestion or inflammation in any part of the gastrointestinal tract.
Esophagus Problems: Besides, certain conditions like Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), Esophagitis, Esophageal Spasm etc caused by factors associated with the esophagus may also cause chest pain on the left hand side.
GERD, in particular, may cause chest cramps on left side of the chest. Such chest pains are often mistaken for cardiac ischemia.
Problems associated with lungs: Pneumonia, Pleuritis, Pulmonary Embolism, Pulmonary Hypertension, Collapsed Lung and other such problems usually lead to chest pain on left side or right side of the chest. The pain tends to become worse with breathing.
Hyperventilation: Chest pains due to Hyperventilation are usually caused by Panic Attacks, Stress, Anxiety and other such psychological causes that induce the affected individual to breathe rapidly.
Other issues like Herniated Disc, Arthritis in the neck, thyroid diseases, Anemia, abnormal fluid retention, excessive alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking, exercising immediately after having a meal or intake of certain medications can also give rise to general chest pain or specific chest pain on left side.

FOR THE LAST WEEK I HAVE BEEN IN DISCOMFORT, GETTING WORSE EACH DAY. WENT TO DR, HE DID BLOOD WORK, WAITING FOR TEST RESULTS. PAIN SITUATED UNDER THE BREASTBONE, AND RADIATING TO THE UPPER BACK OCCASIONALLY RESULTING IN SPASMS, UPON BENDING, OR TURNING CERTAIN WAY, DOES NOT FEEL AT ALL LIKE MUSCULAR. SOME RELIEF WITH HEATING PAD, FEEL IT MORE AFTER EATING, OR WAITING TOO LONG BETWEEN MEALS. THOUGHT POSSIBLY IT WAS GALLBLADDER/GALLSTONES. NO SHORTNESS OF BREATH. NO RELIEF AFTER BOWEL MOVEMENT EITHER, WHICH HAS BEEN NORMAL. I AM AT A LOSS AS TO WHAT THIS COULD BE. ANY SUGGESTIONS. THANKS .
Sandra, Were your symptoms ever diagnosed, or issues resolved? I am currently having the EXACT same symptoms and would appreciate knowing if I am being paranoid or should head to the doctors. Thanks
I am having exactly the same symptoms. could you please let me know what the doctor says? thanks 🙂
I have very similar symptoms. Did you ever have this diagnosised? Mine is getting worse, the doctors insist it is not my heart, but the pain is terrible especially after bending. Thanks.
Sandra died from cardiac issues

I have high blood pressure, went to the doctor about it, they took and reduced the pill mg until now I am off completely because pressure went to low. I had my sugar checked, it was fine. I had my cholesterol checked they said I can work on it to get down. I am currently doing so through diet and exercise. I just recently hit my middle finger and it is numb at the tip and sore around the nail. What is this? I grill everything, I eat no condiments…I can’t hav a decent glass of wine. I don’t know what to eat or do anymore. Any comments?

Anyone out there that can help ? Yesterday evening whilst working I started to feel pain around the upper left area of my chest. Not in a great deal of pain at the time but on waking up this morning it literally took me an hour just to get out of bed. The pain occurred whenever I tried to turn to my left or right side & when I tried to raise my self from either position of from my back. Upon getting up the pain is still there whenever I try to lift either shoulder but strangely is not painful to touch. I am 47 years of age, of average build & weight & for many years I have been involved in manual work & kept myself fit. Any help or advice would be greatfully appreciated.
I have been having chest pains for about 3 days I have also had a large amount of no sleep as to working shift work and little exercise I don’t feel short of breath or dizzy etc if I grab the muscle under my left arm the pain stops as I rub it, or walking also stops it unsure as it doesn’t seem right

Hello everyone, right now I am 15, and had recently begun to recieve chest pains. After reading all these facts I grew terrified over the fact of this being a tell-tale sign of a heart attack. I’ve never had chest pains in my whole life! Now suddenly im getting all these symptoms! The best course of action I can see at this point is to simply go to the doctor and have them check me out. Are there any suggestions on what I should do?
I had a heart attack in 2009. Right coronary artery was 100% blocked and LAD 85%. Doc stented Right but wanted to wait on stent LAD, 6 weeks later another heart attack so they stented LAD. Now I am having chest pain, goes to jaw and left arm feels heavy and aches. Problem is this only has happened when I am resting or just doing light housework. The puzzeling part which makes me question if it is my heart is I am doing a brisk walk every day and I do what amounts to a moderate to heavy areobic exercise daily with no chest pain. This has happened several times in the last couple of months but is getting more frequent. I can’t afford a heart cath right now, I have a $4,000 deductable on my medicalinsurance. I don’t want to spend that kind of money if this is not caused by my heart. Anyone have this kind of problem before? I take nitro when have the pain and after 2 it goes away….today it has come back, first time that has happened.
Ask your cardiologist about imdur and Ranexa. The imdur is a daily tablet of nitro but is time released. I still carry my emergency nitro but this keeps my oxygen levels more regulated for my heart condition. The Ranexa actually allows the heart to relax. Just some ideas….it has worked wonders for me.

i’ve been having upper left side chest just above my breat.. Also it is accompanied by some back and arm pain.. earlier today, my vision blurred.. almost as if there were strange circular lights and i began to feel dizzy as if i were going to faint and i was a bit disoriented.. my chest and arm still have some pain but seem to diminish some while im active.. and then reoccur when i stop.. any ideas what it could be? maybe just gas? 🙂
I’ve been having painful chest pains rigt above my left breast and right under my collarbone. The pain often appears when Im resting or sitting up right but doesnt really hurt when moving or walking. I get so scared when I feel it that I just sit very still or lie down, most times I will hold my hand over my collarbone & press down or press on my chest lightly, this sometimes makes me belch which feels good but the pain comes back. Im so afraid that I have a heart problem or even cancer & im only 33. Been to doctors repeatedly only to be told my vitals are norml, bloo work & chest xray is normal??????
My initial response to everyone is see a doctor!! Soar muscles are normal after increased activity but constant or consistant pain is not. Your bodies are telling you something!! I am not a doctor, just a 38yo mom and have learned this from years of neglecting my health, signs and symptoms. Now I have no gallbladder because I disregarded a really horrific what I thought to be a virus, and 2 months later had it again only to have my gallbladder rupture and cause more problems. It was in the hospital that I also learned what I always shrugged off as tightness of the chest ro be allergies, was an actual heart condition.
Enough of me. Think of your health, your family and find a doctor that you are comfortable with and take care of yourselves!!
Really people. Do you think someone on here is going to give you the answer to your medical issues??
For the kids that posted…tell your parents what is happening. For the adults…you already know only a dr can answer your questions!!
i ave pain in my left chest,it come an goes.sometimes its a very sharp pain that feel like some thing is stickin me, my head, arm, neck hurts at times.
i am on hypertensive drug because i was diagnosed mild hypertensive. I had left side chest pain for three days when i turn my neck of try to look down my left breast. I reported to hospital but was given ibuprofen, after taking a dose I had a sharp pain worse than the earlier. I stopped taking the drug but no longer experience pain. What will this be and what am I to do?
I have Fibromyalgia , Rheumatoid arthritis and Mitro Valve Prolapse. I have chest pains in my left side, back and upper left abdomen. I always go to ER or doctor. Nothing . I smoke and trying to quit. I too am scared. Bronchitis usualy. It is like I am alone. If I complain to much, I get looks from Husband and son like STFU! It painful and lonley.
my mum has fibromyalgia and i have arthritis. both are miserable conditions that seem to appear to be worse with anxiety. I really feel for you..im guessing you dont sleep well either..which makes things even worse. I cant speak for my mum..but i will always listen to any complaints because i know it helps to let it out. as for myself being a single mum with small kids i found the stronger i am mentally the better i can accept and move on with the pain (although this has taken many years to overcome).
i hope you reach out and find a group that will help you if your family make you feel guilty for your pain…just remember you did not choose it. Dont let it beat you atleast not every day. I wish you lots of good health and great support.
I personally have this same problem as most of you. I have had this issue for 11 years. It has gotten so excruciating that it has been a huge distraction with everything I do and is AND can be very painful… I HAVE HONESTLY TRIED COMMITTING SUICIDE OVER THIS ISSUE MIXED MENTAL ILLNESS ISSUES. I have had this checked out… I am 28 yrs old. IT IS MOST LIKELY NOT YOUR HEART at all. Getting your heart checked goes like this…”Well we have GOOD NEWS There are absolutely NO physical problems or issues with your heart” For some this is all they need to hear and get immediate relief. MY BEST SUGGESTION IS THIS…..1. IMPROVE YOUR POSTURE DAILY. DO NOT SLOUCH DO NOT LEAN BACK. 2. PRACTICE DEEP BREATHING EXCERSISES FOR 10 TO 30 MINUTES. THIS DONE PROPERLY I GUARANTEE YOU WILL PROVIDE A HUGE RELIEF FOR THE MAJORITY OF YOU. 3. IF NEED BE SEEK A CHIROPRACTOR. 4. WHEN SLEEPING MAKE YOUR BEST EFFORT TO SLEEP ON YOUR BACK THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE NIGHT. SLEEPING ON YOUR SHOULDER CAN CREATE STRESS ON THE CENTER OF YOUR CHEST TRANSFERRING PAIN TO THE LEFT SIDE OF THE CHEST. 5. TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODIES. WORK OUT. GO TO THE GYM. DO PUSH UPS AND SIT UPS. NO MATTER YOUR PHYSICAL HEALTH YOUR BODY CAN CHANGE. HEALTHY EXCERSISE AND DEEP BREATHING AND MEDITATION IS HUGE. THIS CAN PREVENT PANIC ATTACKS. SOME EVEN FEAR THESE PANIC ATTACKS TO THE POINT WHERE IT CAN CREATE ABSOLUTE STRESS AND ANXIETY. PRAYER EVEN HELPS OR TALKING TO FRIEND OR RELATIVE AT A SPIRITUAL OR HONEST LEVEL. WHATEVER THE CONVERSATION MAY BE PREPARED FOR ANYTHING AND DON’T LET YOUR FEELINGS GET HURT(sensitive people in this case such as myself can become lost mentally in this case) AS HUMANS WE CAN CARRY SUCH LARGE AMOUNTS OF STRESS AND WEIGHT ON OUR CHESTS, SHOULDERS AND BACKS IT CAN BE RIDICULOUS. SOME OF DON’T EVEN KNOW IT YET.
DISCLAIMER:I AM NOT A DOCTOR… ALWAYS SEEK A PHYSICIANS ADVICE OR CHECK UP. I HAVE HAD EKG’S, X-RAYS AND OTHER TESTING DONE WITH NO DEFINITE ANSWER BUT IT NEVER HURTS TO CHECK.
hey, i am hypertensive, was diagnosed of this condition in the year 2008 n hav been on drugs. Early this year i started feeling a slight pain on my left part of the chest. It comes n goes n especially when i turn my head to the right side it feels tight in the left chest. My ecg test was normal. doctor advised me to hav an x-ray done, still waiting for results………………..Some one pliz advice me, thanks
I am 12 years old and I am having dull pains on the left side of my chest and sometimes in the middle. I am scared to death, i have recently had a panic attack. Some please help!!!
For the past 10 days I have been experiencing extreme pains in my upper left chest. It gets worse when I move my left arm, breathe, bend down or turn around in bed. I also have a dull headache an occasional nausea. I am 51 years old, suffer from high blood pressure and cholesterol. This feels like my heart or lung. Went to the ER last night. They did ECG, all is ok. Doc says I have Tietze’s or Costochondritis. Two injections and a lot of money later, I still feel the same. The pain is slightly reduced, but headache and pain in the neck has increased. Had a good night’s sleep, but I feel tired and weak. Suppose I expected too much from the 2 injections I had. Nevertheless, I am not so sure about the diagnosis. Think I will consult Prof Celine Bernstein’s book called Healthseekers. It seems to make more sense to me at this stage, rather than young doctors playing guessing games.
Hello to everyone! About 5 years ago I was suffering from almost all of your same symptoms. Chronic chest pain, Pain in left back, Pain in upper ab about 3o minutes after eating, heart Paplatations, sudden sharp chest pain (felt like someone was stabbing with a needle)…..
I began to associate the pain with eating. So, I drastically changed my diet.. No booze, no fast food, no fried foods, NO SODA, no chocolate, no foods high in acid. Guess what… the pains did not go away completely BUT… greatly reduced. Went to Gastro doc at that same time and got endoscopy Up and Down (gross!) and MRI, sonogram, blood tests, EKG, even dye injected thru catheter in my leg .. into my heart (check for any blockages) No blocakge found. They finally diagnosed me with GERD Gasro reflux. I was put on a med called Protonix and it worked.
Bottom Line.. (i know you all dont want to hear it… CHANGE YOUR DIET)
seriously, drink more water, high fiber foods, fruits/veggies, NO SODA!!
I started to have the same symptoms 2 months ago and now Im changing my diet AGAIN and guess what… Chest pain is greatly reduced
Thanks heaps mate, at last someones got some decent advice!!!
