How To Get Rid Of Hair Bumps?

January 23, 2012

Although you must be eager to find out how to get rid of hair bump, it is better to first consider what exactly these ugly, acne-like bumps are and the reason why they are caused.

Hair bumps are also known as razor bumps. They are raised, inflamed bumps that result from improper hair removal, especially after shaving, waxing or tweezing. Basically, it happens when your hair curls back in the skin in a coil pattern.

The most common reason causing these rashes is lack of moisturization before removing hair from skin. Plus, coarse and curly strands of hair are more prone to this problem.

Hair bumps are characterized by symptoms like raised bumps, skin irritation, pain, and at times, itching and inflammation, too. The condition is known as Pseudofolliculitis Barbae in medical terminology.

How to get rid of Hair Bumps naturally

  • • Regularly exfoliating the skin is one of the best solutions for getting rid of hair bumps. The process removes dead skin and oil buildup that block skin pores and do not let hair bumps heal.

You can use a soft brush with bristles prepared from a natural material, not plastic or a loofah for this purpose. The gentle massaging motion improves circulation, too.

  • • You could also use a liquid soap mixed with a teaspoon of baking soda.

  • • Prepare an aspirin mask by adding one teaspoon of honey, half a teaspoon of vegetable oil (sweet almond oil, jojoba oil or olive oil, for instance) and about four crushed uncoated aspirin tablets.

Add a few drops of hot water in it so that the mixture does not remain too thick. Apply this mixture on ingrown hairs for about 10-15 minutes. Finally, wash it off with lukewarm water.

Do not pluck it out completely, though. Finally, apply an antibacterial soap and rinse. Do not squeeze the bump, rather, let it heal naturally.

  • • Apply a benzoyl peroxide ointment on the affected area to reduce hair bumps to some extent. You can also opt for a benzoyl peroxide shaving cream to avoid this problem.

  • • If you are trouble by razor burn, apply a combination of strawberry pulp mixed with one teaspoon of sour cream.

  • • In order to avoid hair bumps, make sure you shave in the direction in which your hair grows. Dampen your skin (preferably with warm water) to soften it before removing hair and do not use any alcohol-based skin care products after hair removal as they tend to worsen the irritation.

Plus, do not shave too close to the skin and do not stretch it while shaving. When removing hair, do not shave the same area more than twice. Needless to say, use clean and sharp shaving equipments and apply a moisturizing lotion after shaving.
